A screen separates material into the required size fractions and connects crushing stages with the final products. Screen selection should therefore be considered together with feed characteristics, throughput and material transfer arrangements.

Define the product sizes

Start with the number of products and the size range required for each one. Aperture size, deck count and effective screening area need to suit that duty and the material. A throughput figure alone is not enough to establish the specification.

Consistent feed matters

Large changes in feed rate or uneven distribution over the screening surface can affect separation. Moisture, fine particles and sticky material also matter when reviewing the screen type and screening media.

Include recirculating material

In a closed circuit, oversize material returns for further crushing. This recirculating load needs to be included when reviewing crusher, screen and conveyor duties. Coordinating the line involves more than comparing nominal capacity figures.

Allow access for maintenance

The layout should provide access for inspection, media replacement and component servicing. Horizontal and inclined screen arrangements should be assessed against the material, available height and flow path.
